Dual representations of cardinal preferences

چکیده
Given a set of possible vector outcomes and the set of lotteries over it, we define sets of (a) von Neumann-Morgenstern representations of preferences over the lotteries, (b) mappings that yield the certainty equivalent outcomes corresponding to a lottery, (c) mappings that yield the risk premia corresponding to a lottery, (d) mappings that yield the acceptance set of lotteries corresponding to an outcome, and (e) vector-valued functions that yield generalized Arrow-Pratt coefficients corresponding to an outcome. Our main results establish bijections between these sets of mappings for very general specifications of outcome spaces, lotteries and preferences. As corollaries of these results, we derive analogous dual representations of risk averse preferences. Some applications to financial theory illustrate the potential uses of our results. Finally, we provide criteria for comparing the risk aversion of preferences in terms of the dual representations. JEL classification: C02, D01, D81

متن کاملOrdinal Games
We study strategic games where players' preferences are weak orders which need not admit utility representations. First of all, we extend Voorneveld's concept of best-response potential from cardinal to ordinal games and derive the analogue of his characterization result: An ordinal game is a best-response potential game if and only if it does not have a best-response cycle. The characterizatio...
متن کاملMultiutility representations for incomplete difference preorders
A difference preorder is a (possibly incomplete) preorder on a space of state changes (rather than the states themselves); it encodes information about preference intensity, in addition to ordinal preferences. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a difference preorder to be representable by a family of cardinal utility functions which take values in linearly ordered abelian groups. T...
متن کاملHow to combine inconsistent ordinal and cardinal preferences: A satisficing modelling approach
This paper analyzes a situation where a decision-maker provides cardinal and ordinal information about her/his preferences towards m objects (criteria, alternatives, etc.). However, the two rankings derived from her/his preferences are different. This situation of ''inconsistent preferences'' is formalized. Moreover , in order to deal with this type of conflictive situation, a satisficing model...
متن کاملCharacterization of optimal dual measures via distortion
We derive representations for the optimal dual martingale measure Q∗ associated with the dual to a primal utility maximization problem in a class of incomplete diffusion models containing a traded stock and a non-traded correlated stochastic factor. Using a distortion power solution [29] for the primal problem, an explicit solution is obtained for the dual value function, yielding representatio...
